![]() ![]() Best employee - Chio, our room concierge. Every person will have a different experience. We will likely go back to regular booking once our membership expires. We have already used our membership for another trip to Costa Rica, but I have to say the benefit really doesn't outweigh the savings. We did the math and joined the "Choices" membership, which is the last option they will offer as it's the cheapest. We spent 4 hours with about 6 different sales people and 2 "closers". This time we decided we would entertain joining. Other notes: The vacation club - we went to the speech the first time and stayed away the last few trips. You may be in the shower or at dinner, you never know when it's going to happen. Power outages - they frequently lose power to the whole property, at least once a day. We always go to Cancun the same time every year, but they were more prevalent at Akumal, especially at the swim up rooms. Mosquitoes - there were more here than at Maroma. Due to our room location, this did not affect us, but depending where your room is, it may impact you. I understand the angry wedding party, but the resort should have planned it better. We were enjoying the outdoor live music at the lounge bar and someone from a nearby wedding party came over and harassed the live singer. Corporate events - they had 6 or 7 events going at the same time, which causes competing between the events and louder music. If you rent the beach bungalows, you will have people camping out in front of you, which doesn't happen in Maroma. Akumal had lots of chairs at the pool and we never had a problem finding a good spot at the pool. You need to get up early to claim a good spot. Lots of chairs! This is somewhat of a problem at Maroma. It's actually a better beach than Maroma, but you have more people, so that's the trade off. The beach - the water is very warm and fun to swim or snorkel in. I highly recommend the Japanese and Italian restaurants. The food - its on par with Maroma with minor differences. Maroma doesn't have the same aquatic life for snorkeling and no turtles. There is also a dive shop just down the beach if you want to dive or take classes. We snorkeled every day and saw lots of underwater activity. It is amazing! You will see many sea turtles and stingrays. Ok, so let's get into the pros and cons of Akumal vs Maroma Pros: The biggest advantage of coming here is the snorkeling. This is not a big deal as there is plenty of beach, but just be aware there will be lots more people at the beach. ![]() Akumal is very much like Maroma, but instead of a private remote beach, Akumal shares the beach with other publicly accessible businesses nearby. ![]() We booked 10 nights and stayed in a partial ocean view junior suite. We have stayed at Secrets Maroma twice and decided to try Secrets Akumal last year. My wife and I have been going to Cancun for the last 10 years.
